A cold wind (Piteraq)...

According to Wikipedia, Piteraq is a “cold Katabatic wind which originates on the Greenlandic icecap and sweeps down to the east coast”. Especially occurring around Tasiilaq or Ammasalik / Angmagssalik as it’s called in Danish. What on earth has happened to this blog you probably ask yourself? You came here for music and instead you’re getting a lecture (though quite a brief one I admit) in meteorology. Oh well! Thought this would be the perfect way to introduce the beautiful solo track Piteraq (20 Blaa Celcius) by Entakt frontman Jonas Villumsen, because I wasn’t sure whether any of you knew what a Piteraq actually was? Maybe I was completely mistaken, but I happily admit that didn’t know what it was, so I thought I’d share my newly acquired knowledge (doesn’t happen very often, so seize the moment)!!

Piteraq was the first track published from Mr. Villumsen’s ongoing solo project, which (for now at least) seems to have the working title 3913 (the postal code of Tasiilaq). However the solo recordings doesn’t mean that Entakt has been put to rest, as a pre-mix of a new track was made available for streaming yesterday (either from the band’s new webpage or below if you happen to be a lazy sod). The new track has cunningly (?) been named Klubben i Angmagssalik, which sort of ties it all together.

But the Greenlandic connection aside, the songs bear very little or no resemblance to each other. Not going into any details, as I think you should listen and judge for yourself, but it always a pleasure, when artists choose different musical paths for their solo projects rather than make a version 2.0 of the band.

On the radio this morning...

Every morning when the girls and I are having breakfast the radio is on, and from time to time it does happen that some really fine stuff is aired, thus helping to make the start of the day a good one. The “On the radio this morning” posts are my humble attempt to make your start a good one as well!

Shorties...

Stream the new (and rather dull) track Do You Love It by Mew over at Soundvenue. Included on the band’s forthcoming compilation album Eggs Are Funny.

The debut album Living and Growing by The Felt Tips will be out on Plastilina Records on November 15.
+ Dear Morrissey

Your truly was mentioned on last week’s Tuesday Podcast. Yay!!

Sounds as if the Death Valley Sleepers debut album is coming along nicely.

under electric light has “blend my love for The Beach Boys and my Shoegaze influences” on new track Waiting For The Rain To Fall.

Entakt frontman Jonas Villumsen has mailed that he'd like to share a track from his ongoing Greenland inspired solo-project. Expect that one to pop up here any time soon.

Here's the new video by Tears Run Rings for their beautiful track Divided.

On the radio this morning...

Don't think I'll ever be a fan of Gorillaz, but this one's pretty decent. Cannot say I care much about their "universe" though or whatever one should call it.

Various...

The Boombox Hearts are playing a semi-acoustic concert at Nørrebro Bryghus tonight at 9 pm. Wish I could go. Especially after watching those videos!

The very-soon-ready-to-be-shipped 7” Get-to-Bed Birds will be the last ever (I believe) release by The Lucksmiths. Out on Matinée Recordings and the title track was originally included on the magnificent Matinée Grand Prix compilation. Get-to-Bed Birds is sheer brilliance and so vintage The Lucksmiths that it’s impossible to add anything that hasn’t already been said.
+ Get-to-Bed Birds

When (not if) you visit the Matinée page to order the aforementioned single, don’t forget to order the equally soon-ready-to-be-shipped 7” single Life Returns To Normal by Northern Portrait. Interestingly the band’s rendition of Some People, which originally was recorded for the Buffetlibre Rewind project, is included on the single.
+ Some People (Cliff Richard cover)

The debut album Travels in Lowland by The Migrant is out now. The release will be supported by a series of gigs around the US, which I believe is quite rare for a Danish artist?

Yes; I know I've posted this one before... But I really (really, really) love this song!

Modern History...

The new OMD album The History of Modern is (finally) out today, but thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I’ve been able to give a few listens prior to the release. The band still sounds unmistakably like OMD, as they have found inspiration everywhere in their back catalogue from Enola Gay to Walking on the Milky Way. Obviously the album is neither a new Architecture & Morality nor a new Sugar Tax, but less will do just fine, as long as the band doesn’t sound like a sad copy of their former self. And fortunately they don’t, which I probably wasn’t the only one who feared, as they haven’t lost the ability to pen catchy pop songs. Perhaps a new OMD album isn’t what the world has been missing, but sure it's great having them back!

Thanks to Shuffler.fm the number of visitors to this blog has increased significantly the past month. And this weekend the total number of page views since the launch of the blog surpassed 1 million.

Dane Oh Land will release her US debut EP next month, so the promo mails have started to arrive. When her debut album was released in Denmark two years ago, I received exactly zero promo mails.

The new improved hypocrisy...

With their new track The new improved hypocrisy, The Radio Dept. shares their thoughts on the upcoming Swedish election. Cannot say I'm all that crazy about bands getting political, but when the message is accompanied by a song this gorgeous…oh well!

Shorties...

It’s man vs. technology today, as my computer is anything but cooperative.

Boxstr.net is down for the third day in a row! So you won’t have much luck if you try to download any of the files I’ve uploaded to this rather useless service. Need to find a better filehost.

Coast Is Clear turned 5 years old yesterday. Happy anniversary!

Way of the Warrior by The William Blakes is out today to somewhat mixed reviews (ranging from 3 to 5 stars).

The short, electronic and catchy Solid Copper Huntress by Fops popped up in my mailbox last week and will soon be added to my list of current favorites.

Five track EP Boats by [the] caseworker is out on Indiecater Records on September 20. Hopefully the rest of the EP is a great as the title track!

so I thought I'd post a couple of videos for songs with "Sunday" in the title. These were the first two to come to mind and both of them are bloody brilliant!

Lazy Friday evening...

And quite a lazy one it is. The wife is out, the kids are watching some useless TV-show and I’m here by the computer having one of my favorite beers. So I guess you can say that everyone’s enjoying themselves. And that’s a nice way to end what has (in many ways) been a rather good day.

First of all I was out running 25 minutes this afternoon. Those few of you who are regulars will know that my back’s been bothering me for the past 3 weeks. Simply put, I’ve been “grounded”, as I was told that running was close to the stupidest thing I could do as long as the back was aching. But yesterday my chiropractor (finally) told me it was ok to start running again and though I’m obviously light-years away from marathon shape, I’m still confident that this was the first small step toward better days.

And even earlier today I bought a ticket for the Divine Comedy concert at Lille Vega on October 23. At first when the concert date was announced I was rather frustrated, because I expected that I'd be away on holiday at that time. But plans have been changed, so time has come for my first Divine Comedy live experience! Heard it should be great!?

Finally I bought two CD’s today, which I believe are the first in perhaps six months. I hate to admit it, but I’ve completely changed my old music purchasing habits this year and no longer invest my cash in them golden discs. But today I just had to! The first one was the new album by Kent. I still think it’s a somewhat disappointing release, but since I'm calling myself a Kent fan it simply doesn’t make sense not buying the bands releases. The second album was The Suburbs and the reason for this purchase is really very simple, as it's by far the best release of the year and I need to be able to hear it everywhere (car, stereo etc.).

Yesterday Ginger Ninja guitarist Rasmus shared a video on Facebook of a Dutch band covering Sunshine. This rather alternative version generated several rather amusing comments of which my favorite was “ninjazz”. Funny!

On the radio this morning...

Unfortunately I cannot run the interactive video/film for the song on my (rather useless) computer at work, but thanks to this video I now have some kind of idea of what it’s all about. It looks incredibly cool, and hopefully the person who uploaded this version won’t mind me knicking his (or hers) childhood memories.

From the mailbox...

Yay! Here we fucking go again. No words. Just plain music. I know these posts are boring shit, but today I’m doing what dozens of, hundreds of, the true number is probably closer to a thousand, people are asking me to do; “please give our music a listen” or some different version of that sentence. And since multitasking is not my kind of thing, I cannot write, listen and pretend to be working at the same time. As always I will try to only post the good stuff, though I cannot guarantee that one or two blunders won't be included.

This one’s really, really cool! "It's a creeping march through the dark side of 80's no-wave, but with fantastic pop sensibilities". Exactly!

+ The Migrant - The Organ Grinder
Funny! Didn't know that this guy was from Denmark. Neither did I know that he used to be in The Elephants (not sure if "used to be" is the correct term, as the band is probably still around) just like Martine of C'est Tout Martine (that I mentioned two days ago)!

OMD - If You Want It...

This is the video for new OMD single If You Want It that was released yesterday. I'm somewhat disappointed to have to write this, but I do think that the song is rather dull and the video is very…hmmmm…not really sure what it is.

September 6, 2010

Stuff...

Thank you for asking! My back is feeling a whole lot better and the light at the end of the tunnel is now visible. Not bright and clear, but visible. Feels really good, though rather unfamiliar, trying to be positive and optimistic!

French Horn Rebellion remixes new OMD single If You Want It and the end result is worse than bad. It’s free to download “if you want it” to check out yourself. I’ve been a fan of OMD for more than 25 years, so it’s far more interesting to post that new album History of Modern will be out on September 20. That’s the first album to feature the “classic line-up” since The Pacific Age, which came out in 1986!

I’ve been listening a lot recently to this cool track by “space-motown / post-shoegaze groupCalm Palm Vaporfrom the south-side of Chicago”.

Here’s some good news straight from the inbox. Self-titled debut album by Danish indie pop quartet C’est tout Martine will be out on Divine Records on September 24. Lyrics are in Danish, but as always I hope you lot will give the music a chance nonetheless.

Mixtoverdener.dk...

Danish remix project Mixtoverdener.dk (mix two worlds) is back for a second season and first band out is Oh No Ono, who remixes/gets inspiration from Karsten Fundal's percussion concerto named Ritornello al Contrario. The end result is a rather playful version/track called Kom ud og leg (come out and play) and interestingly this is the first time Oh No Ono sings in Danish. Remixes from the first season are still available to download and especially Champions of the Wild Side by Spleen United frontman Bjarke Niemann is worth a (re-)listen.
