Spencer and the phantomz...

NY singer-songwriter Spencer Tricker has granted me permission to post and share his brand new recording Phantomz. Described as “A little Belle and Sebastian, a little early Coldplay, a little homemade, heartbroke American effort…predominantly acoustic and very stripped down”. The track is taken from a forthcoming EP/mini album in the works that’s going to be called Anesthetics. Mr. Tricker continues to be working hard with his music in a “desperate bid to avoid getting a real job one day”. I can only respect that so much and I sincerely hope (and firmly believe) that ultimately his fine songwriting skills and lovely voice will make him reach that goal.

Tonight's the night...

Yep - tonight I'm going to see Shout Out Louds & DAYS at The Tivoli in Helsingborg. Despite being a hundred years old, it will be the first time ever that I attend a concert in Sweden. It could be/should be/will be freakin' awesome!

Yesterday I finally got my hands on the 4 year old demo CD/album Forsidestof til Eftertanke by ENTAKT. It took some begging, some waiting, some foul language and in the end some threats that I was going to send my domestic troops of young rascals into action, before something actually started to happen. But now I have my own copy and since every regular reader of this blog knows that I really love this band, I am obviously delighted to be able to add this small jewel to my music collection. And because I'm totally biased I won't even bother trying to explain how great the CD is!
+ Livets sang går i stå mol (wonderful track)

NY singer/songwriter Spencer Tricker is currently working on a small side project (seems like a lot of those projects are floating around these days) called The Kid Syndicate. He has mailed me two tracks that he describes like this: "One is sort of a cartoon noise-fest about nightclub people and the other one is more like ghosts in a haunted house singing about war." Think I prefer his more laid back solo tracks, though the new ones could be sleepers as they are not without a certain charm!

Danish weblog Frekvens has picked up the pace and posts news several times a day. And it has been redesigned as well!

It's not secret that I'd like my blog to become widely popular and I've touched this subject a few times before (cannot recall when really). So today I visited a few of the really, really popular music blogs to see what's happening there and maybe even find a few interesting topics I could "borrow" to post in this blog (and even more importantly try to understand WHY they are so popular). Now that I've finished my "tour" I've come to the conclusion that I have these two options:
1. I can change my strategy and start to post news, gossip and maybe even a few songs by useless artists like Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Posh (just gossip), Paris Hilton (even more gossip), RW and JT, as well as every single artist and celebrity showing up at the MTV Video Music Awards.
2. Do absolutely nothing and continue blogging in obscurity!

Which option do you want me to pick?

Songs...

Today has been awful at work. And it didn't exactly get any better by having quite a few songs that I'd love to post. Here are the songs and hopefully I'll find a little time tonight to write a few comments....

+ Spencer Tricker - Hey Jessica
More songs like this and chances are pretty good that he never has to get a real job one day (check his webpage for explanation).

+ Professor Pez - Indiepopkids
+ Professor Pez - Imperial Airways
Was checking out a friend's profile over at Last.fm and noticed that he had been listening to this Norwegian indie pop band. And how can you not love a song called Indiepopkids?

+ Fine China - Are You On Drugs?
+ Fine China - I Can't Fall Asleep
Previously recommended by Peter and Chris. Originally recommended to all of us by J.A. Good stuff and a shame they decided to split up!!

+ Us With Millions - The Tactician
+ Us With Millions - Sailor Song
+ Us With Millions - Shepherds Hour
Picked by Danish music magazine Gaffa as demo band of the month (March). Described as indie-rock with some country influence, and compared to Band Of Horses.

+ Les Mercredis - Sowas von egal
Pretty cool tune by this German electro pop trio.

Spencer in Munich?

Danish shoegaze/indie-rock 5-piece Munich has finished recording the debut album and 3 songs from the album can be downloaded from the band's Myspace profile (meaning that they are in the typical poor Myspace quality). The songs are not as shoegaze inspired as I expected them to be, but instead the band sounds like it has found a source of inspiration in fellow Danish rock band Kashmir! I cannot find the release date for the album anywhere, but since the songs are really great, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of it - whenever it will released!
+ Eyes Of Glass
+ Sea Ports

Spencer Tricker is a songwriter from N.Y., who (in his own words) writes and records music "in a desperate bid to avoid getting a real job". I have to admit that I like his honesty. No bullshit about saving the world, and who cannot relate to his ambition about avoiding getting a job? On the first of the two tracks below, Altar Boy Blue, he sounds very lo-fi almost in an Iron & Wine kind of way, but on the second track, Oblivion, things suddenly get a lot more "plugged" towards the end of the song. I cannot decide which part or "musical direction" I like the most, but facts remain that Spencer has a great voice and a knack for writing beautiful songs! I guess only time will tell, if those skills are enough to "save" him from taking a 9 to 5 job once his days as a student are over, but hopefully we'll hear a lot more from this very talented singer/songwriter!
