From the mailbox...

Spent a couple of hours last night reducing the size of the mailbox from 3,922 to 3,697 mails. Summed up you can say I spent the time on reading, deleting, downloading, listening, deleting again (most of the time) and cheering (not that often). Here's what I have to show for my efforts:

+ Baby ScreamNicole
+ The Grand Opening - Be Steady
+ Drew Seeley - Into The Fire
+ Milks & Rectangles - Auction Block
+ Violens - Violent Sensation Descends
+ Englishman - Angels and Earthworms
+ Crushed Stars - Black Umbrellas
+ Silver Swans - Anyone's Ghost (The National Cover)

and this video for Nothing But Clues by The Migrant.

On the radio this morning...

I never waste an opportunity to rip Depeche Mode, as I seriously think that they’ve only released two decent songs the past 20 years (one / two). But in 1990 (and before that) it was a completely different story. Back then they hit it often and they hit it hard!

Every morning when the girls and I are having breakfast the radio is on, and from time to time it does happen that some really fine stuff is aired, thus helping to make the start of the day a good one. The “On the radio this morning” posts are my humble attempt to make your start a good one as well!

Catching up - part III...

Didn't quite keep my promise from Wednesday, but there was no time for writing catching up posts yesterday. One day late, but here we go…

First of all thank you Chris for the heads up on Champagne Riot’s forthcoming release plans. So I did get the Matinée part right, but the EP won’t be called Moonstruck as I predicted (which really wasn't something I predicted, but rather something I assumed as the band itself called it just that). Instead it’ll be named Confessions of a Poker Pro and “will be a compilation of our best recordings from fall 2009 through to summer 2010”. Plans are that the EP will be released before Christmas and (my) hopes are that this one will be included (the tracklist has yet to be revealed).
+ Ingrid Bergman

Tempomatador (the sister band of The Boombox Hearts) has been rather busy lately recording songs and having their first official band photo taken. Pre-mix versions of two songs are free to download and Tidsfordriv (which means something like pastime in Danish) especially is really, really great! Assuming (here we go again) that all the hard work is supposed to lead to some kind of release…eventually?
+ Tidsfordriv

This is really how things should always work. I mentioned The Wonderland Washouts in a post 2 weeks ago and even though it was brief, it was enough to catch the interest of Peter. He decided to feature the band in his blog, which then made the band share links to both our blogs on their Facebook page!

Today Like Glass by the abovementioned The Wonderland Washouts is BandBase track of the day and on November 12 the band will play a concert at Hillerød Ny Teater, which I just realized is located in the same building where I worked from 1995 to 2001! Sometimes it really is a small world!
+ Like Glass

Sister Mary Says is the second single lifted from the OMD comeback album History of Modern. Sounding like vintage OMD and a fairly close relative to Enola Gay. The demo version of the track is still free to download from the official webpage.

On the radio this morning...

It's "play-Danish-music-day", so there'll be nothing but music by Danish artists on the radio today. When scanning the playlist I cannot help being somewhat impressed by the number of fine artists we have in our small country!

Catching up - part II...

Anyone remember the three fine live recordings by The Boombox Hearts at The Copenhagen X Sessions I posted last month? If you do and enjoyed them, you'll probably be thrilled to learn that the recordings are now available as free downloads. Plenty of other stuff to download there as well including recording by Giana Factory, Kissaway Trail, Sleep Party People, just to mention a few.
+ The Boombox Hearts - Secret/Girls

The four tracks that will be included on the forthcoming Moonstruck EP by Champagne Riot can be streamed at Soundcloud. As always the songs are electronic, lovely and catchy! No official release info to be found anywhere online, but if the small flyer I found in a parcel recently received from Matinée Recordings is to be trusted, the EP will (at some point) be out on the world’s finest indie label. Awaiting verification…

Moonstruck by Champagne Riot

What was in that parcel you ask? The new Northern Portrait 7” single Life Returns To Normal. In a stunningly beautiful cover, pressed on clear vinyl and just one of a thousand copies made. Wish “life returns to normal” meant a return to the 80’s, where collecting limited edition singles like this was great fun. Not going to comment on the songs, as it must be rather tedious reading the exact same raving comments every time I’m mentioning the band.
+ Life Returns To Normal

Has yet to make up my mind whether or not to buy a ticket for the Warpaint concert at Loppen Tuesday evening. Would love to go and I know I’ll regret it if I don’t. But the concert will most likely start 11 p.m. or later meaning that I’ll be home and in bed at around 1.30 a.m. And the outlook of spending the following day regretting that I went (because it’s hardly rocket science to predict that I’ll be very, very tired) isn’t really that appealing.

Planning to post “Catching up – part III” tomorrow.

Catching up...

What a truly awful week it has been so far. Had last week off from work and a lovely week it was, spending it with the family doing all the stuff families normally do (I guess); museum, zoo, cinema, theater etc. Ending it in a proper manner (without the family though) with that wonderful The Divine Comedy concert Saturday evening. But back at work Monday morning, I learned that my colleague had been ill all of last week (and she has not returned yet), meaning that no (zero, zip, nada) work in my department had been taken care of. So the past two days I’ve been more than busy trying to clean my desk (and my colleague’s), as well as preparing for (and attending) a couple of meetings. Did I ever say that work is highly overrated? Sorry about the whining. Will post some proper stuff later today!

From the mailbox...

Want words? Look somewhere else!

+ Radical FaceDoorways
From the Touch of Sky EP that will be out on Morr Music on November 16. Radical Face is the solo project of Ben Cooper of Electric President.

+ The Wonderland WashoutsDance With Desolation
New Danish band describing their music as noise-pop. Grab the band’s first EP for free via BandBase.

+ Ten Million LightsKill Yr Idols
This is the new band of two former members of Saturna. A self-titled debut CD has just been released.

+ Blonde SummerCathode Ray
Excellent track that can be found on the band’s debut EP Eleganza.

+ Summer LibraryDo You Ever?
Have to quote the promo mail on this one: “The Swedish-sounding A-side is backed with “Past The Railroad Tracks,” which sounds as if someone might have snuck a synthesizer into a Field Mice song. Jangly guitars and catchy melodies pervade these two tracks.” Grab it for free at February Records.

+ Le Futur PompisteFive Hundred Heartbeats
From the band’s self-titled album which is released by Shelflife Records on November 16.

At this very moment I have 3,441 mails in my inbox. I wish I had the time to listen to all the undoubtedly great music. Hell! I wish had the time to just read the mails. Inevitably I’m missing out on lots and lots of great stuff. And I’m probably disappointing a few people as well by never replying to their kind mails. I’m sorry; I really, really am! But not a whole lot I can do about it right now…I guess?

Red Box...

Went on a nostalgic Youtube trip yesterday and spent quite some time listening to a string of 80’s bands including Talk Talk, Alphaville and Visage; just mentioning a few. All thanks to receiving the information that Red Box is back and that a new album named Plenty has been released by Cherry Red Records. Greybeards like me perhaps remember the two singles Lean on Me and For America that were fairly big UK hits in the mid-80’s? If you have no recollection of neither, I can only recommend you give the two songs a listen. Should either bring back some good memories or introduce you to some true gems that have eluded you for far too long! As always I’m somewhat skeptical, when bands who have been inactive for nearly two decades suddenly decide to return as I really cannot help questioning their motives (£, $, €). But the two songs I’ve heard so far (note to self: really need to get my hands on the album) are of surprisingly high quality and raise hope that there is more to this highly unexpected and most welcomed comeback than what I’m implying.

Shorties...

I know these shorties and video posts suck, but it’s really the best I can come up with these days. Call it lack of inspiration call it whatever you like. Sorry! But that’s how things are right now!!

Canadian quartet (!) Jon and Roy share a track from their forthcoming album Homes.
+ Boon ‘Elm

Don’t forget to download the first EardrumsPop single. It’s by Tiny Fireflies, it’s free and it’s just brilliant!

As stated last week (and numerous times before); no one does it better than Labrador. 7” single Closer Now by Club 8 will be out on November 23 (according to the promo mail and not December as written on the Labrador site) and of course the label offers the lead track as a free download!
+ Closer Now

Socio Peruvian pop musician Francois Peglau has put out his album The Imminent Failure of Francois Peglau via BandCamp and shares this track as an appetizer!
+ You know we won’t make it (if you come around)

Here’s a really nice but rather odd-titled freebie by Bubblegum Lemonade.

This is the first official music video from Danish trio Tetris=Therapy. The track can be found on the band's (rather brilliant) debut album Acquaintances.

Shorties...

Putting the video postings on a temporary halt!

Electro-disco-dance-pop (whatever) duo Kisses gives away a new song from their forthcoming album The Heart of the Nightlife. And no! It’s not a mistake. The track is indeed called Kisses!
+ Kisses

Stream the new (and final) album Fast Trains and Telegraph Wires by Trembling Blue Stars right here. The appropriate titled album closer No More Sad Songs is the album's definitive highlight!

Limited edition 12" vinyl Never Follow Suit by The Radio Dept. is out on November 9. As is (almost) always the case with Labrador releases the label gives away the lead track. No label does it better!

Via theradiodept.com I just came across this Lo-Fi-Fnk remix of Heaven's on Fire.

On the radio this morning...

Was actually quite surprised to hear it on the radio without the video being mentioned? Especially since I've always thought that the song itself was pretty weak and would have gone unnoticed if it wasn't for the video. But the video remains rather fantastic!

them:youth - Toothache...

Watch the video for the new excellent single Toothache by them:youth. One should never try to predict "the next big thing", but them:youth could easily be just that! Toothache is free to download right here.

Effing beautiful, but why this song? Because I watched Closer last night. That's why!

Get in line for the sunshine...

The Ginger Ninja concert Friday evening was brilliant, as the four boys gave quite a performance. They promised to bring a party and this was exactly what they did. A few of my friends were somewhat skeptical before the show, but it didn't take long before they had all been won over by the string of catchy songs and the band’s immediate charm. How I wish other bands would bring the same energy and presence with them on stage as the Ninja’s. I won’t try to convince anyone that they are inventing or reinventing (for that matter) anything. Obviously they are not! And I very much doubt that they will be featured in any history books 25 years from now. But right here, right now? They just make life so much more fun and an evening spent with the band is definitely an evening well spent. Sorry about the picture. I should have brought my camera rather than trusting my phone to do the trick.

Underworld - Diamond Jigsaw...

Probably going to loose the little street cred I have left, but this (really, really) is my favorite song right now!

On the radio this morning...

Of course it was the single version they played this morning and not the (otherwise pretty cool) one she performs on the video. But since no official video seems to be available, this one will have to do. Taken from her soon-to-be-released US debut EP.

Some kind of bliss...

Found a mail a few minutes ago mentioning Kylie Minogue which made me think that the only album I’ve ever really liked by Kylie was Impossible Princess. And that album (of course) remains one of her least successful releases. But that just so typical me enjoying what other people don’t - and vice versa.

And seconds before publishing I suddenly remembered that I've (more or less) written exactly the same once before.

On the radio this morning...

Going to see Ginger Ninja at Toldkammeret tonight, so talk about timing. Perfect, perfect timing! Doubt that any of you blog readers will be there, but if you are; say hello and I promise I'll buy you a beer!

And a couple of MP3's as well:
