Holiday's coming up...parte uno...

Planning (hoping) to post “parte secunda” tomorrow before the girls and I leave for two weeks of pizza, pasta and red wine galore.

Back among the living after suffering for a couple of days from what is now known in Denmark as the “Robbie disease”. But still tired beyond belief...

I'm a Loney Dear fan so of course I have to mention that the track My Heart from the forthcoming album Hall Music is available as a free download. Not blown away as I hoped I would be, but still expecting the album to be nothing but truly awesome! How can it not be?

One of my current favorites is this laid-back and mellow 60'ies inspired track by Starlight Girls.

Yesterday, I received my tickets for the Arcade Fire concert in Copenhagen on August 28. Two tickets (yes), on two different rows (what?). Nice work CrowdSurge. Nice work indeed!
+ Wake Up (CrowdSurge! - I'm tempted to add)
Will probably think of more later today - but for now - that's it!

Loney Dear live...

Check this live recording of Loney Dear teaming up with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. According to the maestro himself "this IS the best live recording of Loney dear so far". And stunningly beautiful it is indeed!

Shorts...

Via The Line Of Best Fit/Something In Construction comes this first preview track (the correct title is Blues and not Loney Blues) from the forthcoming Loney Dear album Hall Music.
Loney Dear - Loney Blues by SICrecords

The William Blakes announced yesterday that the band's new album (and fourth since the debut in 2008) will be out soon. An (almost) unprecedented pace of work and you'll have to be amazed if the album is of the same quality as the first three!
+ Violent God

Spleen United are busy recording their third album (follow the progress on Facebook), but have nonetheless found the time to remix Kenton Slash Demon's Sun.

Reality Bites from the upcoming two-track single by Emerald Park is absolutely ace!

Catching up...

Like it or not. A post like this was inevitable...

Been giving the new Arcade Fire album a few spins today. Because everyone else seem to enjoy it (and because I’m such a dickhead), I really want not to like it. If nothing else, then just to be able to say that I’m not buying into the hype. Got to admit that this mission has failed completely, as my first impression is beyond positive.
+ Wake Up (not from the album, but you knew that already)

Danish blog Regnsky talks to new band Treefight For Sunlight (in Danish) and offers the band’s excellent single Facing The Sun as a free download.

Loney Dear is currently compiling songs for his album #6, and gives away this recording that (probably) won’t make the cut.
+ dreamer22mars (I guess this means that the working title was Dreamer and the recording took place on March 22?)

Yes is a new (and the second of the year so far) track recorded and published by One Weekly Gun.
+ Yes

It’s not an official one, but a video for Northern Portrait’s I Give You Two Seconds To Entertain Me has surfaced. The band seems to like it enough to post it on their blog and it does contain a few rather funny sequences (number 8 in yellow anyone?)!

Catching up...

As mentioned yesterday; the world has been really busy while I was away, but today I’ve been equally busy (and still am) trying my best to check updates, mails und so weiter.

I swear. Someday I’m going to find out what is so fabulous about of Montreal. Unfortunately new track Coquet Coquette doesn’t quite provide the answer either! But someday!
+ Coquet Coquette

Swedish one man project bakers at dawn is working on a new album (or more precisely a “record”, so perhaps it’ll just be an EP?) and first track published bodes really well for the album/record/whatever.

Sky Sports predicts that Northern Portrait will end up on the cover of NME some fine day! Since Sky Sports isn't really about music at all the true purpose of the feature was to ask Stefan of the band to share his World Cup memories! Could be interesting to hear if this year's World Cup has given Stefan any "new favourite moments" (pun intended).
+ New Favourite Moment

Great new demo track The Occasional Ego-Boost by Jeremy Sparrow can now be streamed at Myspace. Recorded by Tobias a.k.a. mr. Death Valley Sleepers.

If Facebook is to be trusted the new Loney Dear album (which will be the 6th album release by mr. Svanängen) will be out on February 15 (next year I suppose, though the update doesn't say this excatly).

Watch Tetris=Therapy perform an acoustic version of the track Seasick (the original version can be found on the debut album Acquaintances.

Shorties...

Hopefully I'm not over interpreting the update just posted at Loney Dear’s Facebook page, but it certainly looks as if the band’s sixth album is almost finished?

mp3hugger calls Heart Stab by Champagne Riotthis year’s sleeper anthem” for the Ibizan dance floors. And don't forget to download the track. It's awesome!

Register and download (for free of course) two new tracks by lastbandalive.

Den Dag by new Danish band Chadore has been getting a couple of real fine reviews over at BandBase.dk. I know the lyrics are in Danish and thus making the song less appealing to most people, but man is it catchy!

Various...

It's time to remove a few names from the "to-do-list".

I've been listening to I Am John, I don't know how many times today. Don't know exactly why either, but for some reason it has caught my attention (once again) and is now stuck in my head (and refuses to leave).
+ I Am John

New single Halleluja! by [ingenting] must be as close to pop perfection as you'll ever get! From the forthcoming album Tomhet, idel Tomhet, which is now available for preordering.
+ Halleluja!

Talented Danish youngsters Tetris = Therapy has announced that they'll start re-recording their old material as well as record a few new songs. 6 older tracks are free to download from BandBase.dk.
+ Big Tasty

Champagne Riot is no longer a one-man project and should now be labeled a band (or trio to be nitpicking correct). Will be interesting to see if the full line-up will be on stage on Sunday.

Lovely UK indie pop band The Cavalcade has three new tracks streaming at Myspace. The 3 tracks are included on the band's second EP the Edition 59 EP, which will be released August 5. If you haven't guessed already, only 59 copies of the EP will be printed.

Loney Dear at Lille Vega...

I’m not going to write that much about the concert, as no words I can think of will ever do it justice. That Emil Svanängen (a.k.a. Loney Dear) is a gifted songwriter has been beyond any discussion from the moment I was introduced to him 3 months ago, but that he’s such a fantastic singer and charismatic performer as well (I will remember those goosebumps during The Meter Marks OK for a long, long time), was something I had to wait until this Sunday evening to learn. That combined with having the great fortune of bumping into the maestro himself following the concert, just to learn that he’s an extremely friendly and utterly humble person, made this a truly memorable evening.

Looking ahead...

This Monday I mentioned that the past weekend had been quiet and uneventful. Looking ahead I can see that the forthcoming weekend will be anything but. Friday evening I’m planning to attend the Ruined by Martin debut concert at Lades in Copenhagen. Saturday I’m going to a birthday party and Sunday evening I’ll once again be heading for Copenhagen, to finally see the much hyped (but deservedly so) Loney, Dear at Vega. Tickets are still available and with Marching Band being the supporting act this has developed into a “not to be missed” evening for any true fan of Swedish indie pop.

Indie MP3 is back! And it’s not an April’s fool joke! At least so we’re told.

French music blog Absolut Noise, which dedicates its scribbles solely to Swedish music, has posted the track I väntan på Sten by Lerkruka. Especially worth mentioning as the track is a cover of The Pixies classic Here Comes Your Man; but sung in Swedish.

The track At the Mall by Sweden’s Emerald Parkwas featured on "Pop on Paper" by Uwe Jähnichen (Radio Blau, Leipzig) and on the Darkhorse podcast show”. Whatever that means exactly? But the band seems happy about it and has thus decided to make the track free to download.
+ At the Mall

I’m currently working pretty hard to get into new Danish psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll quartet Le Cul. The Here’s Our Friend Charlie EP is free to download from Bandbase.dk. Not quite sure how exactly to describe this and The Rock and Roll Report compares the band to a string of other artists, though their comparison to “the youthful elements of Franz Ferdinand” seems fairly reasonable. The do sound like they are having a lot of fun, but I probably need a few more listens before I’m able to join the fun.

Shorties...

This morning I bought tickets for the White Lies concert in Lille Vega (March 4). Seems like the hype has yet to reach Denmark, as tickets are still available.
+ Death (Crystal Castles Remix)

My Loney, Dear CD collection is now complete, as the missing 4 albums arrived yesterday.

Don’t forget to grab the new track Jetstream by Doves, which is free to download at the band’s webpage. It’s far more electronic than anything we’ve heard from the trio before, and definitely better than any track of the disappointing Some Cities. Kingdom of Rust will be out April 6 and expectations are growing.

Sony has signed Danish indie rock quartet Ginger Ninja. About bloody time if you ask me that some label finally “inked” this extraordinary band.
+ OnePlusOneIsThree

The album The Night Is Ours by Australians Youth Group will be out in the US on April 7. In case you missed it, this was Chris’ favorite album of 2008.

A fine start...

Perhaps some of you remember that I opted not to post any ”best of 2008” lists. As I wrote back then, it had lots to do with me not liking the “nature” of those lists, as they are so definitive. But in all honesty it was equally caused by the (in my opinion) lack of great album releases in 2008. Well a few outstanding ones aside that was. Therefore it’s really encouraging that 2009 has already given us a few fantastic releases.

Dear John by Loney, Dear arrived in my mailbox last night and it’s pretty much what I hoped for. A little darker and perhaps a bit more complicated than Loney, Noir, but those charming indie pop tunes are still very much present. Now I'm impatiently waiting for the other 4 Loney, Dear albums to arrive. I've never been good at lengthy reviews, so instead I recommend you read the fine one posted by Chromewaves today.
+ Airport Surroundings

Probably no band is more hyped these days than White Lies, but still the debut album had no problems whatsoever meeting whatever expectations I might have had. Cannot think of a better way to describe the band and its music, than this one, originally posted by Exitfare (the first blog to ever feature the trio): “Think of White Lies as the bastard love child of Editors and The Killers, only better”. White Lies will be playing at Lille Vega on March 4 and I'll do my best to secure a couple of tickets tomorrow, when tickets go on sale.

Another band worth some hype (but not really getting any) is Florida dreampoppers Purplespace. The band’s second album A Tiny Little Spark follows nicely in the footstep of the 2006 debut Broken Bells, as not much has been changed. So once again the band proves, how well shoegaze and electronica blend, and whenever those female vocals set in, it almost make you feel like reaching for the sky!

Someone Like Me...

Some of you probably agree that countless are the times where I’ve whined about the lack of quality of the music sent to me in various promo mails. And I’ve often asked myself why I even bother checking them out. But then suddenly out of the blue something pops up, which makes it all worthwhile. The most recent example is this energetic, anthemic and catchy track; Someone Like Me; by London quartet glass.ligths. It’s not like this is highly original and it does sound like something you’ve heard times and times before. I mean – it’s pretty obvious that we’re roaming around somewhere in the indie rock neighborhood of bands like Editors, Killers, Kaiser Chiefs etc., but this track has no problems holding its own. Actually it easily outdoes most of the stuff released by said artists. So I guess what I'm really trying to say is that this is a damn good one.
+ Someone Like Me

An Entakt track which didn’t make the På Bagsiden Af Europa album will soon be free to download. It’s named Orkestret Med Det Blotlagte Skelet (which roughly translates to something like; The Orchestra with the Exposed Skeleton) and is said to be somewhat Tom Waits inspired. Check back for more information.

Loney, Dear will be playing at Lille Vega on April 5. Ticket has (of course) been bought.
+ I Am John

Those of us, who actually gave it a listen, probably agree that the debut album Where The Storm Meets The Ground by The Storm was a major disappointment? But the duo seems to be in good spirits and has recently announced that they will soon start recording a follow-up. However I do suspect that everyone’s expectations will be significantly lower this time around. To be honest I’d much rather hear news on the forthcoming Mew album.
+ The Beauty Of Small Things

Last week I posted a pretty good Dave Wrangler remix of the Animal Collective track My Girls. Mr. Wrangler has now set up a small webpage where several other fine remixes are free to download.
+ The Raveonettes - Black White (White Room Remix)

One Weekly Gun is back writing songs again. The first track of 2009 is named The Song that Kills and was inspired by the situation in the Gaza strip. Obviously this is a sensitive topic, which has already led to a heated discussion.

This and that...

I’m honestly happy for all the bands announcing that they’ll be playing at SXSW in March. Even think it’s quite understandable that they fill up my inbox with messages telling me this. Obviously it’s easy being excited as a band, when something like this happens. But when the bands start asking if we should meet or hope that I will consider them for any showcases I might be hosting, things start getting slightly ridiculous, as the obviously haven’t read a single word I’ve been writing. Then they’d know that I’m 40, married, a father of two small children and living in Denmark. What are the chances exactly that I will be in Austin in March?

In my New Year’s post I vowed that I would continue writing about bands that you’ve probably never heard of. One of those bands could be impressive new Danish rock trio The Minor Collective, which has just published three tracks. Don't be surprised if these guys pop up in some future post.

Like everyone else, I’ve decided to jump on the Loney, Dear bandwagon. Listened to the 2007 album Loney, Noir numerous times yesterday, which then made me order the forthcoming album Dear John. Gorgeous stuff!

Hate this. Promo track Like Lunatics from the Modern Skirts album All Of Us In Our Night was dreamy and beautiful, so I asked for (and immediately received) a download copy of the album to hear if the rest was equally great. Sadly the album (a few tracks aside) is rather uninteresting, and certainly not what I hoped for. But nonetheless please give Like Lunatics a good listen.
