As was promised last week here’s a post containing every song ever recorded by Ruined by Martin as well as the four new songs by the “offspring” tung_nem. In an attempt to give you the best possible impression of the musical transformation the band has gone through, I’ve tried to list the songs chronologically. Plus mentioned the number of people involved in the project at the time of the various recordings, with lead singer Martin Arnholt being the only recurring band member. But as you can see some information and songs are missing, so I guess I need to ask the band to supervise the list.

The new album by The National was announced. To be released May 11 and will be named High Violet. Frank says it's awesome! I’m almost prepared to wager next month’s salary that no song on the new album will be as fantastic as Fake Empire. If there is, then it will definitely be worth the price!

Band of Horses quickly sold out their concert at Vega on April 18. And, as I expected, announced that they are about to release a new album. Infinite Arms will be out on May 17 (or 18 depending on your location), but sadly not on Sub Pop.

I received a promo mail with a copy of Plastic Beach. Stylo is a nice one, but the rest is definitely not my “cup of tea”.

The band formerly known as Ruined by Martin okayed a “in retrospect” post. So hopefully a post will be up next week containing every track ever recorded by the band.

Now here’s a band that I’ve never really been able to figure out. When I first heard about Ruined by Martin in December 2005 the duo (as it was back then) played catchy electronic influenced pop music, and having just been picked as Demo band of the month by Gaffa the future looked incredibly bright. That was exactly 4 years and two months ago (or 50 months if you like) and since then the band has seen a number of line-up changes and managed to be absent for lengthy periods of times; and then each time, just as I began fearing the we’d never hear from the band again, they returned with songs sounding better than anything previously recorded. And each time, the band had moved one step further towards a darker, more electronic, less catchy and perhaps even depressing sound, thus showing them constantly developing their musical approach and not being afraid of walking new paths. Logically every return gave hopes that now was the time that their career would kick-off, but sadly history kept repeating itself. Whether or not this will once again be the case, only time can tell, but two days ago the band was heard from again for the first time since September last year. And this time the band is not only retuning with a batch of fine new songs (the march towards a darker universe continues), but more importantly with a new band name - tung_nem. A decision taken by the band as a consequence of the musical transformation the band has gone through and the musical relationship with Ruined by Martin becoming more and more distant. So in the future there’ll be no more news or music to post from RbM, but hopefully plenty of stuff from tung_nem? Unless of course the band decides to pull another disappearing act! Let’s hope not!

Swedish synth pop duo This Vision has just released their self-titled debut album on their own label Devotion Records. I'll write more once I've listened to the entire album, though I do recommend that you give the four streamable tracks a listen. Unless of course you don't like catchy pop music!

Evening update...

As much as I'd love to, there'll be no listening to Muse tonight. I'm simply too tired, and doubt that Id be able to stay focused for an entire album.

Not exactly music related, but UEFA Champions League kicks off tonight. Won't watch any game(s), but will definitely be monitoring the scores.

Gave the debut by The Big Pink a quick listen earlier today. Obviously it's too early to say anything, but I did quite enjoy what I managed to hear of A Brief History of Love. Will bring it with me to work tomorrow, so colleagues beware. When some idiot start shouting about "girls fall like dominos"; it's just me.

Just saw that Ruined by Martin will be playing at Rust in Copenhagen on November 14 as part of “Ekstra Bladet live” (whatever that is exactly). If your short term memory is remotely better than mine, you’ll probably recall that this is the very same night at the first of The Banana Hold-Up club nights. No problem, as I thought I could do both. But I just checked the calendar, and my wife is going out that night, so I’m the one in charge of the kids (insert “unhappy smiley”). Hmmmm - anyone interested in babysitting?

First aid...

Not trying to indicate that the blog is ailing or anything, though some might think differently. But just my simple (and perhaps somewhat awkward) way of saying that I’ve been absent from the blog the past few days, thanks to my participation in a first aid course. Getting much needed new knowledge, though obviously I’m crossing fingers and toes (and just about everything else) hoping that my recently acquired skills will never be tested!

When I wrote IFPI and asked for an explanation for why my post had been taken down, I hardly expected I'd be getting one. But I did! Last week the friendly people send the following reply; “We will contact Box.net and ask them to reinstate the file, we apologise for the inconvenience caused.” Wow. Shoot and kill and THEN say you’re sorry? I’ve promised (myself) not to use any foul language, so no further words wasted on this topic...not today, at least!

Two brand new recordings by Danish alternative/electro pop quartet Ruined by Martin are free downloads from the band’s webpage. Been following the band closely ever since I heard the first demos (a long, long time ago) and I’m absolutely thrilled that songs are now being produced at a much faster pace than (probably) ever before. Especially since I’m and optimist and sees this is a sign of the band having decided that Ruined by Martin is a project they badly want to succeed, and therefore is willing to give it their full attention. The two tracks are surprisingly different, as Scissor Paper Rock is an immediate catchy pop tune in the “usual” RbM fashion, compared to the darker, moodier and more industrial sounding Sub Intelligence. But as always the band's music is of the highly recommendable kind.

This has to be the worst song to come out of Sweden for I don’t know how many years. Though I’ll have to admit that it is actually quite funny, hearing my 3 year old daughter roaming around the house shouting “svennebanan”.

Seems like NY shoegazers Soundpool will soon have a new album out, as the band has put up a 12 minutes sampler at Myspace from “our newest album” Mirrors In Your Eyes. The sampler is downloadable via Last.fm.

One-man band Boy Without God was picked Gaffa's demo of June as the album Your Body Is Your Soul received 6 out of 6 possible stars. That combined with the opening track Holy Holy Little Fist being labelled "possibly one of the best songs I've heard this year" has really sparked my interest.

It’s been a while, since the last time I posted anything recommended by Rodolfo. But yesterday he sent a mail including the track Moving by Finnish band Delay Trees, which promptly made Peter response “very, very, VERY good”. So I simply had to give that track a listen and obviously Peter’s comment was spot on! Said track is not a free download, but luckily the equally excellent track About Brothers is. Both tracks are from the 7 track Self Construction EP, which was released last month (can be ordered directly from the band’s webpage).

Now here’s a real gem from the inbox. The infectious and energetic F.R.A.N.C.E. by London five piece them:youth. The band’s debut single Bows and Arrows will be out on Another Music = Another Kitchen Records on 25 May, so this is simply meant to be an appetizer. And such a brilliant starter it is that it has left me speculating how insanely fabulous the debut single has to be, since F.R.A.N.C.E. didn’t make the cut!

I have a staggering 2,725 myspace "friends" and yet I have difficulties finding more than a handful of bulletin posts of even remote interest? A bit of cleaning up among those so-called friends is what I need to do!

I have yet to order the new Over and Over album by The Legends, but these two short and noisy (but still incredibly melodic) sample tracks certainly makes it very tempting.

To Warsaw and back...

Back again from an Easter trip to Warsaw with the family, where we did very little besides eating, sleeping, playing with the kids, drinking beers and playing Mario Kart. So obviously we had one heck of a time, though it didn’t leave much room for any decent music listening. But always fun watching friends discuss whether or not the Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack is crap and getting overly nostalgic together by listening to some radio station entirely committed to 80’s music. Anyway here I am, back in the saddle again for the next 8 days, until it’s time to board the next plane.

Plan to do some “live” blogging Friday and Sunday evening, as the wife will be out both nights. And the mailbox looks as if it could explode any second, so there’s plenty of stuff to go/listen through.

If anyone’s interested; there’s been no reaction from IFPI/Blogger on my “open letter” post and both post and track are still very much there. Cannot say I anticipated any reply, but in a way I did expect the post to be deleted.

New song by Ruined by Martin is streaming at Myspace and the band remains true to its somewhat Depeche Mode influenced sound.

As I wrote last week I wasn’t too excited about the Start! Festival line-up. So trying to be as open-minded and optimistic as possible, I have now started listening to a string of the unknown bands, and so far one artist especially has made a really great impression. Young Dane Jeremy Sparrow (his artistic alias) plays catchy indie-rock and the 4 demos available have received plenty of airplay in the office today. His is currently recording his debut EP, with assistance, among others, from Ebbe Frej (EPO-555) and Tobias Winberg (Death Valley Sleepers), and plans are that it will be out on the recently established label Ha Ha Records some time this summer.

Ruined by Martin and more...

The Ruined by Martin concert Friday evening was a mixed experience. It sure was great finally meeting the guys and equally great to at first hand be there to witness that the band has moved to the next level and is now a live band. Unfortunately the venue didn’t offer the band the best conditions as they had to take care of the sound themselves. So on a few occasions the sound was deficient, but taking into consideration that this was their debut and they had to do it in DIY fashion, they certainly did a fine job. And no doubt the band has learned a lot from this experience and I feel pretty certain that they’ll be doing even better the next time they hit the stage.

Unfortunately the next time won’t be at this year’s Start! Festival, as they weren't included in the official program, which was published Friday evening. Just like previous years I’m somewhat skeptical about the line-up, as there aren’t that many artists included I know that well. So the next couple of months will be spent getting introduced to a string of new and hopefully interesting acts.

Before the Loney, Dear concert Sunday evening I met Ivan (ex-Oliver North Boy Choir) for a few beers and got a brief update on the various projects involving the former ONBC members. There’s not much to be revealed right now, but in a few months time expect a few songs to surface.

Rounding out the post is some absolutely cracking news. Come May the debut album Criminal Art Lovers by Northern Portrait will hopefully be out on Matinée Recordings. Around the same time look out for the second album from The Electric Pop Group. To be named Seconds and (of course) this is a Matinée Recordings release as well.

Looking ahead...

This Monday I mentioned that the past weekend had been quiet and uneventful. Looking ahead I can see that the forthcoming weekend will be anything but. Friday evening I’m planning to attend the Ruined by Martin debut concert at Lades in Copenhagen. Saturday I’m going to a birthday party and Sunday evening I’ll once again be heading for Copenhagen, to finally see the much hyped (but deservedly so) Loney, Dear at Vega. Tickets are still available and with Marching Band being the supporting act this has developed into a “not to be missed” evening for any true fan of Swedish indie pop.

Indie MP3 is back! And it’s not an April’s fool joke! At least so we’re told.

French music blog Absolut Noise, which dedicates its scribbles solely to Swedish music, has posted the track I väntan på Sten by Lerkruka. Especially worth mentioning as the track is a cover of The Pixies classic Here Comes Your Man; but sung in Swedish.

The track At the Mall by Sweden’s Emerald Park “was featured on "Pop on Paper" by Uwe Jähnichen (Radio Blau, Leipzig) and on the Darkhorse podcast show”. Whatever that means exactly? But the band seems happy about it and has thus decided to make the track free to download.

I’m currently working pretty hard to get into new Danish psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll quartet Le Cul. The Here’s Our Friend Charlie EP is free to download from Bandbase.dk. Not quite sure how exactly to describe this and The Rock and Roll Report compares the band to a string of other artists, though their comparison to “the youthful elements of Franz Ferdinand” seems fairly reasonable. The do sound like they are having a lot of fun, but I probably need a few more listens before I’m able to join the fun.

Not sure how many mails I’ve received the past month regarding SXSW, but it has to be close to 500. Not the most interesting stuff to read through, when you’re not going and have very little interest in who’s playing where and when. The music part of the festival starts tomorrow, so hopefully this insane flow of mails is about to stop. Probably too much to ask, as I suspect that a stream of thank you/follow up/great meeting y’all etc. mails will begin once the festival is over?

I’ve previously mentioned that Ruined by Martin will be playing live for the first time ever at Lades in Copenhagen on April 3. The band will be supporting (or supported by) surf rock/punk trio El Ray, and the combination of these two rather different acts should make it quite an interesting evening.

Tetris = Therapy has to be one of the most talented young Danish bands I’ve ever covered in the blog, but recently the duo has been awfully quiet. Apparently for a reason, as one half of the duo is busy travelling around Europe. So while on his own, Kasper, who makes up the second half of the duo, has launched a solo project named The Yellowing Leaves, and 5 new (and really interesting) recordings are free to download at BandBase.

Blog favorites Entakt are giving away the track Orkestret med det blotlagte skelet, which didn’t make the final cut for the album På Bagsiden Af Europa. Not because it’s bad, which it certainly isn't, but simply because it didn’t fit in. A quite Tom Waits inspired tune sounding nothing like anything we've previous heard from the band.

Youngsters Avisitor will soon be recording new songs. When I mentioned it, the band claimed that the clear The Smiths inspiration on a few of their previous songs wasn’t intentional, so it will be fairly interesting to hear in what direction these new songs will take the band.

It’s now official that Ruined by Martin live debut will take place at Lades in Copenhagen on April 3.

And it seems to be equally official that the new album by Mew will be released in June.

The 2006 debut album Stockholm Syndrome by acoustic/folk duo Murder was a thing of beauty and the band has now begun the recordings of the eagerly awaited follow-up.

The album Are You In The Mood For Love? by singer-songwriter Jacob Faurholt was released yesterday. Haven’t listened to the whole thing, but the two promo tracks are beautiful and reviews are in general quite positive (1, 2, 3, 4).

At the beginning of the learning curve...

Wonder if I’ll ever learn. Spending Saturday night drinking and dancing, and not going to bed until 3 AM takes it toll on an old man like me. Problem is that once I have completely recovered; only the fond memories and the funny picture (I do look goofy I know) will remain. Long forgotten are the hangovers and the way I felt the following Monday morning when going to work. So I guess I can answer the question myself; NO; I will never learn. And a fun time we had Saturday night going to a birthday party. The jukebox was really crappy. It took ages in-between songs, you never knew if the songs you had ordered would ever be played and the selection of CD’s was downright horrible. But somehow the dancefloor was packed all night, so something tells me that it wasn’t that bad after all? Or maybe people aren’t that picky about music, when partying? I even spent an interesting half hour discussing music with some poor soul, who didn’t knew what was coming, when I asked him about music he’s playing (he’s a musician). Hopefully he didn’t feel that much under siege, and I actually thought it was quite an interesting talk, where among topics we discussed the local venue, the future of the music business, promotion, concerts vs. CD sales and of course my favorite "is music tangible or intangible?". But there’ll be no parties for the next few weeks, which should give me plenty of time to recover!

More than once have I labeled Mancunian quartet Kni9hts "the best unsigned band in the world". Now the band is no more! Instead say hello to The Number, which is the new name for the exact same constellation. I’ve always thought that Kni9hts was a pretty cool and (more importantly) rather unique band name, which made google searches etc. much easier. The Number definitely will generate a slightly different “number” of google matches. Haven’t seen any explanations for this sudden change of name, so your guess is as good as any. The back catalogue, which consists of 16 terrific demo tracks, is still free to download from (what once was) the official webpage.

Probably had nothing to do with my whining, but it seems like that the Ruined by Martin debut concert won’t happen on April 25 after all. A new date has been mentioned, but I’ll refrain from posting anything until it has been verified. But at least chances are better that I’ll be able to make it on that new date.

As soon as I had mentioned that Tower of Foil was recording a full length album, the band announced that it has been signed by Series Two Records. The debut album is scheduled for release sometime during 2009.

One eye is weeping and one eye is laughing. Ruined by Martin has finally announced a live date. The band’s debut concert will take place on April 25 at Lades in Copenhagen. This is news that I’ve been waiting impatiently for, and then the first date collides with a trip to Tallinn with the boys. But hopefully this is just the first of many live dates to come? If RbM is still unknown territory to you, 5 tracks are free to download from this post.

Ruined by Martin...

Sometimes it’s almost unbelievable how slowly things progresses. I featured Ruined by Martin in the blog for the first time back in December 2005, when the duo had just been picked as Gaffa’s demo band of the month. And I was really impressed with what I heard and the future looked so bright that I even started dreaming of an album. But for some reason things suddenly slowed down and three years have gone by with very little happening – at least when watching from the outside. The line-up has expanded and the duo is now a quartet with one of the original members leaving and three new ones joining. Roughly estimated the band has recorded (and published) 10 new songs during these three years and the band did actually shoot a video for one of them. Still this must be considered a significantly lower output than one could realistically hope and wish for back in 2005. But yesterday I received a most welcomed message from the band, and finally there seems to be a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. The band is very much alive and the first signs of better days to come is a brand new track named Self Assured, which has been streaming at Myspace for the past couple of days. The track bears the band’s trademark electronic, dark and melancholic pop sound, and obviously I'm thrilled that the band has given me permission to share this excellent track. But arguably the best news is that the band now feels ready to leave the practice room and has begun searching for live jobs. So hopefully it’s only a matter of short time before we finally get the chance to see Ruined by Martin in concert!!

Shorties...

Fucking yeah! The number of daily visitors has finally started to grow and the average of October so far is 426 compared to 409 in September. But the glorious days of November last year (591/day) don’t seem likely to return any time soon.

Not always easy being a small band I guess. As much as I’m trying to hype Entakt, the band isn’t exactly getting much support from the media. None of the mainstream newspapers have (so far) bothered reviewing the new album, and Gaffa is the only music site to post a review.

New demo track Untouchable by Ruined by Martin can now be streamed at Myspace. The band has been awfully quiet for a long time, so any sign of life is welcome.

Next Friday (April 11) I plan to show up at Templet in Lyngby to see BREUMM and Decorate.Decorate.. I've been told that this will be the first official gig played by BREUMM, so it's definitely going to be a night for the history books! I was somewhat disappointed about the Decorate Decorate debut album Normandie, as the single Surname of Copenhagen promised so much more. However I'm giving it a few spins right now, and hopefully it will start growing. Anyway - watch the video for Surname... below and you'll probably understand why the expectations were so high!!



I still have no speakers for the computer, so I can only suggest that you stream the new demo Seven Years by Ruined by Martin and download the new song Hey Messy Queen by Death Valley Sleepers, as I really don't know if they are any good. Though I expect them to be!

Windy Friday...

My first thought was to call this post Stormy Friday (the weather report explains why), but apparently this also happens to be the name of some adult actress/dancer/performer/whatever, so I thought changing the title was the better solution, as I really don’t want this blog to be associated with that kind of stuff. It could be tempting though, as I believe those pages have multiple times more visitors than a humble music blog like mine.

Ruined by Martin has finally released a new track and once again it’s a dark, melodic and (most importantly) absolutely brilliant electronic pop tune. The boys are currently rehearsing and will hopefully announce some live dates very soon. New material has been written, but with their usual speed of work in mind, we probably won’t hear anything new until late 2009 (OK - I'm just kidding guys).

The Storm "storms" into the Danish album chart at no. 2. After listening to the album a few times, it really isn't as bad as some reviewers would want us to believe. Far more interesting is the news that the Yoav debut album Charmed And Strange debuts at no. 33!
