Atypical...

Something very, very unusual happened yesterday, as I honestly cannot recall the last time I went an entire day (holidays not included), without being on the Internet for just a couple of minutes. We probably have to go as far back as 1996, but as written I'm not really sure. But anyhow this is exactly what happened yesterday and I’m rather surprised how well I dealt with it. And it does look, as if the www did behave quite nicely in my absence, so no harm done really!

Working close to the city centre sure does have its advantages, as I just spent my lunch break rushing out and buying the new moi Caprice singles compilation All We Fear Is Love that was released this Monday.

New album Vexations will be out very early next year and hopefully it will equally diverse and interesting as the truly remarkable debut Rest Now, Weary Head! Jonas has just brought to my attention that the band will be playing at Loppen, Copenhagen on March 23 next year!

Brilliant Italian combo A Classic Education has a new free to download single named What My Life Could Have Been out on Holiday Records. The second track on the single is the band's wonderful cover of Toi.

I’m unbelievable tired today. Had a night (which was more like an evening) out with the boys Saturday, and even though I wasn’t terribly drunk, went to bed before 2 am, slept rather well, had a fairly quiet Sunday and another good nights sleep, I’m still absolutely worn out today. But as I’ve said times and times before; “I’m definitely not 35 anymore”. There’s a photo on Facebook taken some time during our small get-together, though I’m not sure if anyone’s actually allowed to see it? If so, I’m the dude on the right, who (more than ever) needs a haircut!

Superb Danish quartet Ginger Ninja are releasing a second single from their forthcoming debut album today. The single is called Bone Will Break Metal and is a surprisingly synth dominated track; still bloody excellent though!

Speaking of Danish excellence. 5 “new” tracks by moi Caprice are now streaming at Myspace. “New” as three of the tracks are alternative versions of previously recorded songs, and as always I’m not quite sure if that’s such a splendid idea. I certainly need to listen to those a few more times, and yet I doubt that they’ll ever be rated higher than the original versions. But the two brand new tracks The Sorrow of War and Tell That Girl (especially the later) are absolutely brilliant and proves that the band still knows how to write those catching pop tunes that to some extent were missing on the previous album We Had Faces Then. The 5 tracks are included on the singles compilation All We Feat Is Love (including a bonus disc called The Past Is a Foreign Country), which will be out two weeks from now on November 23.

Thought that Sweden's Kamera had split up (and they probably have), but nonetheless I've just found their recent single Friday Night in the mailbox...

On the radio this morning...

moi Caprice always seems to be getting plenty of radio airplay, so the band's lack of commercial success remains somewhat puzzling. But the band soldiers on and yesterday the boys announced that they are in the studio recording new stuff. Plans are that a double CD singles collection will be released sometime this fall and should contain 14 singles, 9 re-recordings and 2 brand new tracks. Was planning to post this piece of news in a separate post, so The Town and the City being played on the radio this morning came in very handy indeed!

Every morning when eating breakfast the radio is on, and from time to time it does happen that some really fine stuff is aired, thus helping to make the start of the day a good one. The “On the radio this morning” posts are an attempt to make your start a good one as well!

moi Caprice/No and The Maybes...

Better late than never I suppose? A few thoughts on the No and The Maybes/moi Caprice double-packer Friday evening.

No and The Maybes played a really tight set and managed to include just about every track from their debut album. The songs are short with a Beach Boys/60’s feel to them, which makes you think wayfarers and suntan rather than snowballs and Christmas trees. But despite this being December, it was still nice seeing the trio again and I’m already looking forward to the next time. Plague of Angels has posted a few songs of the debut album, and I strongly urge you to check them out.

Somehow it always seems close to impossible to rate a concert by one of your favorite acts. moi Caprice performed 16 songs and still it was way too short. A few too many songs from the back catalogue were missing and the sound wasn’t the best. But being biased as I am, I still think the concert, despite those flaws, was absolutely fantastic. And it was quite encouraging that a decent number of people actually showed up (close to 100).

After the concert I had the privilege to chat briefly with lead singer Michael Møller and (sort of) got answers to two of my burning questions. What will happen to those “catchy” tracks that the band claims to have deliberately cut from We Had Faces Then (to be released at some later point) and does he plan to release a follow up to his amazing solo album Every Streetcar's Got a Name (he probably will some day, but it will neither sound like Streetcar nor as moi Caprice “light”).

Unless you’re a complete stranger to this blog, you probably know by now that I’m going to see moi Caprice/No & The Maybes at Toldkammeret tonight. As always it will be highly interesting to see the number of people showing up, as my (otherwise lovely) hometown never seems to be very good at embracing upcoming or little-known bands. In a way you can say that my hopes for tonight are split in two. Obviously it will be great if lots of people show up, which should improve the chances of either band returning some other time. Or perhaps even better encourage other bands to (at least) consider Helsingør as a serious option, when planning their tours. But on the other hand it’s always a cool and very intimate experience, when hardly anyone shows up, though this has to be extremely frustrating for the band(s). So as much as I’m hoping for a big crowd tonight, I feel rather certain that it will be an experience for the few.

Nearly laughed my ass off. Just received a promo mail suggesting that I should check out the new track Just Impolite by Plushgun. Please, please, pretty please, check the mail guidelines before sending any promo mails. The person responsible for this definitely hasn’t wasted 10 seconds checking the blog before mailing. Otherwise she would have learned that I’ve featured the track in 3 (1,2,3) different blogposts as well as in this Støj På Frekvensen post. Frustrations aside, I do love the track immensely and don’t mind at all posting it once again!

Will I ever learn to make up my mind? In April I wrote that I thought the Lykke Li album Youth Novels was plain boring. But before making my year-end list, I thought I should give it another listen and suddenly find myself completely in love with it! Apparently I can’t always tell the difference between boring and beautiful? D’oh!

Completely forgot to mention in the same post yesterday that the excellent indie poppers No and the Maybes will be supporting moi Caprice tomorrow night. The band gave a really fine performance at this year’s Vesterbro Festival (now known as Start! Festival) and with plenty of gigs under their belt since the release of the self-titled album in October I expect them to (at least) match that one.

Danish New Order/Joy Division inspired indie rock trio Demons Are Real will release a 5 track EP named The Blessing Of Sorrow on February 2nd. They’ve previously promised that a new release would include more “evil sounding” guitars, so it will be quite interesting to hear if the band has moved in completely different direction. All 6 tracks of the band’s previous (and absolutely terrific) EP Hum Speed On/Off are free to download at BandBase.

On the road again...

Am going to Jutland tomorrow morning in a work related matter and the fact that I will have to spend 6 hours alone in the car (3 hours back and forth) isn't exactly the most encouraging thing I can think of. At least I should have plenty of time to listen to some of the CD's I've bought recently and if the weather is fine the view from the bridge is always fantastic.

Is it possible to eat the words you've written? My judgment of the new moi Caprice album was premature to say the least. The album still lacks those catchy tunes of its predecessors, but according to an interview with the band found in the recent edition of Soundvenue all the catchy tunes were deliberately left off the album. Instead the band focused on producing a more "complete" album and now that I've spent substantial time listening to We Had Faces Then, I think they've accomplished just that.

The first review of the debut album by The Holiday Show has surfaced. The album certainly isn't the most groundbreaking you'll ever lay ears on, but the rating (two out of six) is downright ridiculous.

Scanned through a few promo mails earlier today and noticed the use of the word “infectious” in one of them. And since it’s one of my favorite words, I thought why not give the song a listen. Same Damn Song is by LA duo More Amor and it's, if not infectious then at least, a pretty catchy electronic pop thing.

The fact that I prefer the physical CD’s to digital downloads has been discussed multiple times before in this blog, so no point in bring that one back to life. But I’ve got to admit that the digital downloads have at least these two advantages. Storing all you CD’s can be quite a challenge and to me it represents an ever-growing problem. Furthermore the digital downloads don’t pile up on your desk reminding you about all the music you really ought to listen to. What’s stored on your computer is somehow easier to ignore. So what's brewing?

Yesterday I wanted to buy the new moi Caprice CD We Had Faces Then, but it hadn’t arrived at the CD store, so I went home empty handed (completely untrue – I just bought a couple of other CD’s instead). Instead a digital version of the album, somehow fell into my lap today, so I did get a chance to listen to it today after all. But I am going to buy the physical thing anyway, even though it will only add to the aforementioned problems/challenges – junkies are addicted you know! And despite that I think the album is a disappointment. At least through the first 3 listens it is. This is unmistakably moi Caprice with the lovely vocals and the dreamy sound, but the songwriting is simply not of the same quality as on previous albums. Stream 9 out of 11 tracks at Myspace and tell me I’m wrong?

The sophomore album Crystal Heights by Celestial is probably the next album I’ll give a thorough listen. One listen is simply not enough to make a proper judgment, though the first impression was pretty good.

The Celestial album was mailed to me by frontman Andreas, and he included the 3” single by My Lily of the Valley released on Cloudberry Records. Much appreciated, but at the same time it helped the pile of CD’s grow just a tiny bit higher.

I picked up the Grateful album by Carpark North yesterday, though I’m not quite sure why I did that exactly, as I’m caring less and less about the band for every release. I’m probably stuck with some kind of nostalgic/ancient memory of the Carstereo demo (released in 2000), which I still believe is the best selling demo ever in Denmark.

I also bought two demo CD’s by “local hero” The Village Idiot. Both demos were picked as Gaffa’s “demo of the month” (getting 6 out of 6 stars) and I’m convinced they are absolutely fantastic. Just need to listen to them first. On a side note I found it highly encouraging that it was possible to buy those demos at a “real” CD store.

My biggest and darkest guilty conscience these days is the missing write-up on the debut album by Choir of Young Believers. It’s bloody, fantastic, marvelous and please, please buy a copy. Not sure if I’ll be forgiven or get any relief that way, but it’s sure worth the gamble!

I really hate to write this, but that much talked about Velour concert was a disappointment. I still think they should stay together as a band, but they clearly didn’t bring their hearts to the stage Friday evening.

Supporting act Golden Green Tangerine on the other hand was a positive surprised. The songs they’ve recorded so far sound quite competent, and they turned out to be a pretty good live act as well. The band itself thought they had an off-day/-night, so I’m definitely going to see them again, if they can improve on Friday night’s performance. I’ve asked for a few more MP3’s, but the band doesn’t think that the songs are complete and therefore hesitant to share them.

For the third week in a row Northern Portrait is no. 2 in “Det Elektriske Barometer” chart. Among the testers this week is fine new track The Devil Travels Fast from the forthcoming moi Caprice album as well as the superb Geraldine by Glasvegas.

As some of you may have noticed, I’m testing a new banner. Created by Ryan Kennedy, who used to play drums in Birthday Boys, but is now lead singer in a new project named Rikers. So brand new it is, that the band's webpage has been up for less than 24 hours. His new project does sound a bit like Editors meeting U2 – doesn’t it?

Much talked about Danish duo The Storm are giving away the track The Beauty Of Small Things for free at Myspace. Don’t know for how long it’s been available, so this could very well be last month’s news. Anyway I’m surprised to see the band doing this, but perhaps it should be seen as a marketing response to the album’s lack of success? Good pick by the way, as this is easily the best track of Where The Storm Meets The Ground.

This morning it became painfully evident that no one at Danish Radio (P3) reads this blog, as they (once again) aired the annoying Don’t Get Me Wrong by Pretenders. Thought I explained two months ago that the song is utter crap.

I’m currently listening a lot to the new fine albums by Marching Band and Choir Of Young Believers. I’m hopeless at writing reviews, but I really ought to write something nice about both of them. On that same list are the new ones by Glasvegas and Noah and the Whale.

Monday musings...

Are we in for a disappointment? I certainly hope not, but first single Love at Last Sight from the forthcoming moi Caprice album is, in all honesty, one of the band’s weaker efforts. I love this band to death, but something's just not right here. Stream it via Soundvenue High 5.

It’s exactly 910 days since the first time I featured Kind of girl and today the band’s debut album Lonely in a modern way (buy it – pretty please) is finally released in Denmark. Crossing my fingers that they will get the success they so richly deserve. First review is quite positive.

Time to vote again. Northern Portrait enters Det Elektriske Barometer (“The Electrical Barometer” at no. 2, while Oliver North Boy Choirs drops two spots to no. 3. Puts a smile on ones face knowing that a few people in Denmark do listen to great music!

Busy, busy days...

The past few days have been terrible, but the weekend is approaching and brighter days are ahead. Guess it’s time for another round of “catching up”.

ENTAKT will release their yet untitled sophomore album on October 6. The two tracks (premixes) I’ve heard so far sound absolutely phenomenal, so I boldly predict that this will be my favorite album of 2008.

Diefenbach will release Dark Spinner, their 4th album, on October 27.

We Are Popular, the much anticipated debut album by The Holiday Show, will be out October 20.

October could end up being quite interesting, as moi Caprice (I’ve mentioned this previously) will release a new album as well.

One of the Danish radio journalists got so fed up with the Olympics that he decided to do something completely different and instead explore the Beijing indie rock scene. That way I (and hopefully a few others) got introduced to Carsick Cars, which we have been told are highly popular in their native country. The trio has been the opening act for Sonic Youth a few times and once you listen it becomes pretty obvious that the legendary US act has been a great source of inspiration.

moi Caprice will release their fourth album this autumn (no title yet) and in November/December the band will be touring Denmark to support the release (source). December 12 the band will be playing in Helsingør, so I guess this means that I’ll have to skip one of the Christmas parties (plenty of those in December anyway).

This and that...

The title of today's post could easily have been "Shorties", but I thought it was time for a change, so by using a maximum of creativity I came up with another really fine one...(OK - if you don't get it, I'm being sardonically sarcastic here!).

I'm a bit puzzled why reviewers weren't as excited about the Band of Horses concert as I was. Summing up these 4 reviews (1 2 3 4) the average is 3½ stars out of 6! Come on guys - you gotta be kidding! Or did you spend most of the night in the bar?

Last night I had the privilege of listening to the unmastered versions of two brand new tracks by A Classic Education. They are not up for streaming yet, but I promise you that this is something you should be looking forward to. I was also informed last night that the band is a six piece, so I will refrain from calling the band a trio in the future!

Last night I also managed to find some time to check out a few new tracks, and one that really stuck was Smooth Brotha by L.A. quartet Rue Melo. Mixing Hip Hop, dance, R&B etc. this is not something one should expect would appeal to me at all, but after a few listens I found myself tapping my feet and moving my upper body to the beat of the song. Don't worry - I can still be super indie cool if need be, but this track just has this something that makes it so damn hard to resist.

Saturday night’s alright for blogging…

The girls are sleeping and the wife is at some girl’s party, so the computer is all mine, mine, mine….!

I did some extensive music shopping today and spent my weekly pocket money on 5 CD’s. One of them was the debut solo album Every Streetcar’s Got A Name by Michael Møller (the voice of moi Caprice). As the reviews have been very positive, my expectations were pretty high and luckily I wasn’t disappointed as the 16 songs are heartfelt and stunningly beautiful. But also a bit (actually a lot) more minimalistic than you'd expect, so it's certainly not an attempt to continue the sound of moi Caprice in his own name. I’ve asked for permission to post a track of the album, though I’m not all that optimistic that I’ll get it.

Yesterday Exitfare posted two demo tracks by Concerto for Constantine; the new band of Mark Greaney of JJ72. Really hate to say that I'm not impressed as perhaps every JJ72 song was better than any of these. It's as if he's trying to change direction and want his new music to be a bit "tougher"?

Some of you might have noticed that I’ve abandoned my no ads principles and added some Google ads at the bottom of the right column. So far I’ve earned a strikingly US$ 1.55, so no reason to change the household budget just yet! Obviously chances of someone clicking the ads would be better if I posted them at the top of the page, but after all I don’t want this to look like just another blog that only exists for the ads. But on the other hand I wouldn't mind earning a little money. What a dilemma....not really!

Far too many words already, so here's a recent recommendation by J.A.. Clive from Sweden plays straight forward, rather uncomplicated, but very catchy electronic pop music. And there's really nothing wrong with that - is there?

Indie MP3 writes a few thoughts on The Matinée Hitparade. After I've listened to this one by Bubblegum Lemonade I really should order that album, which is released to celebrate that the label turns 10 years old.

Still a bit depressed about the cancellation of the Arcade Fire concert last night. But it's time to look forward and on Saturday I'm going to see moi Caprice. I've been told that the band isn't any good live, but hopefully that's nothing but "evil rumors".
