RAC vs. Peter Bjorn & John...

Impossible to tell how many times (∞) I’ve whined about how much I hate remixes. But why this hatred you ask? Two reasons really. First of all; it’s pure torture listening to 99.99% of them as they are just plain bad. Second; I’ve never been and never will be a fan of mediocre stuff cluttering my inbox. However (and thankfully) one exemption exists. Should you happen to be the lone music interested soul on the planet, who has yet to be introduced to the miracles of Mr. Anjos and his RAC remixes; this is your chance. Unlike most other remixers, who usually end up with something bearing no or very little resemblance to the original version, he instead (as I hear it) tries to make the songs sound like they would have, had he been in charge of the production. Thus trying to create something that is not complete torture and a waste of time, which more often than not has led to rather amazing versions sounding friendlier, happier, more danceable and even better than the original. Stream (or download) his brilliant new remix of Peter Bjorn & John’s Second Chance below as well as the (almost as) brilliant original. Every Streetcar...

Some of you may (or may not) recall that I picked Michael Møller’s solo debut album Every Streetcar's Got a Name, An Album About Sex and Desire as my favorite album of last year? The past few days I’ve renewed the friendship and once again I’m in complete awe. Rarely have I listened to an album so beautiful, so honest, so heartfelt and so remarkably close to being flawless. It didn't exactly take the world by storm, when it was released, but I'm not quite sure if the world knows exactly what it's missing? I honestly doubt that this post will open the eyes of the world, but I stubbornly insist at giving it another try.

Catching up...

It never fails to amaze me how quickly my mailbox gets cluttered. I turn my back to it for a day or two and it's pretty darn close to exploding. Even if I was a full-time blogger I would never have the slightest chance of listening to all the (probably) great music mailed to me. And it's rather painful knowing that I'm missing out on some great stuff every day!

So what is more natural when you have 100's of mails to go through, than to always check out the ones from your favorites first, and among the "can't miss" mails are those from André of the The Remix Artist Collective (RAC). This time he's giving away his superb remix of Pull Shapes by The Pipettes as well as breaking the news that the collective's first remix album will be free to grab from Stereogum on Wednesday June 11 (that's today!).

I asked the question a few weeks back and we now have the answer! The debut album by The Holiday Show will be released some time this fall on Slow Shark Records. It's been more than two years since I featured this Copenhagen quartet for the first time, so this has been in the making for quite a while!

Not free to download, but make sure that you give it a listen nonetheless. Cloudberry Records are listed among their top friends, so perhaps we'll see an EP release very soon (know what? Innersounds has posted the lovely On Days Like These by Quincy Jones/Matt Monro. Anyone who has ever watched the original version of The Italian Job will probably recall this song as well as the opening scene.

Seems like the British press is falling in love with Kind of girl. Artrocker gives the band's live concert at The Spice of Life in London a rating of 4 (which apparently is very good) and calls the performance "potent and genuinely moving". Toxic Pete ends the review of the forthcoming album Lonely In A Modern Way with the words "...is hard to find faults with...". Well done!

Flashing of Knives (formerly known as Sinai) will release their debut album In Shark Territory on Monday June 30. The release party will take place on Saturday at Undervand in Copenhagen and the doors will open at 9 PM (no entrance and cheap drinks). Hope to get a chance to listen to the rest of the album, as the first single (posted below) is a fine dance inspired rock tune.

Next Friday (April 11) I plan to show up at Templet in Lyngby to see BREUMM and Decorate.Decorate.. I've been told that this will be the first official gig played by BREUMM, so it's definitely going to be a night for the history books! I was somewhat disappointed about the Decorate Decorate debut album Normandie, as the single Surname of Copenhagen promised so much more. However I'm giving it a few spins right now, and hopefully it will start growing. Anyway - watch the video for Surname... below and you'll probably understand why the expectations were so high!!



I still have no speakers for the computer, so I can only suggest that you stream the new demo Seven Years by Ruined by Martin and download the new song Hey Messy Queen by Death Valley Sleepers, as I really don't know if they are any good. Though I expect them to be!

Download the debut single Nettopigen by Starfighters 2007 winner Troels Boberg for free this week from his Myspace profile (as well as a remix of the same track). It's quite popular in Denmark right now and has received plenty of radio airplay. Personally I find it irritating and overrated, but an artist giving a single away for free is always an initiative worth supporting.

Manchester quartet Kni9hts still hold the title as "the best unsigned band in the world", but another UK act that just as easily could be considered for the same "honor", is the shoegaze/dreampop duo The Papertiger Sound. The excellent but (for whatever unbelievable reason) still unreleased album fujipop is free to download from Last.fm.

Sleeping Lessons at the Slowmotion Club...

Yesterday I was contacted by Swedish indie pop trio Slowmotion Club asking me politely (in Swedish) to listen to their recently recorded 4-track EP Tiny Dots. And who can resist an offer like that? I couldn't because, as we all know, I have quite a passion for Swedish indie pop. So off I went to the band's myspace profile and gave them a good listen, which then lead me to send a message back to the band asking for permission to post one of the new tracks. The Gun In God's Hand is, despite its dark lyrics, yet another charming and catchy pop song coming out of Sweden (how many times have I written this before?) and I guess the real surprise here is that Slowmotion Club does not come from the "indie pop capital" Gothenburg.

It has happened more than once that I've been wondering why certain songs were remixed, because the so-called remixes have completely ruined the track and made it almost unrecognizable. So the reason why I've recently posted a few mixes created by RAC (Remix Artist Collective) is probably the exact opposite. I like the way new dimensions are being added to the tracks, while still being true to the original versions. As is the case with this lovely remix of (the already wonderful) Sleeping Lessons by The Shins.
