Bits and pieces...

First a brief update on two of the bands mentioned in my recent “whatever happened to” post.

I did mention that Us With Millions split up, but has since learned that the main reason was the band members lacked the motivation to carry on with the project, when no label was prepared to release their debut album. I’ve (sort of) suggested that they should try to release it themselves on (e.g.) bandcamp, but I doubt if that’s ever going to happen, as I expect the project to be buried and forgotten. The band has mailed me their last recording or, in their own words, “swan song”, which has that very typical Us With Millions sound!
+ Phoenix

Yesterday I received a mail from The Holiday Show bringing the sad (but again, not so unexpected) news that they have split up as well. Apparently musical differences was the reason for the break-up, but all four band members are still involved in music, so we're probably going to hear more from the guys in various disguises at some later point!
+ Snookerstar

Check out this fine Twin Shadow remix of Oh Land's White Nights. Seems like the release of her US debut has been rescheduled and will be out March 15 instead!
White Nights - Twin Shadow Remix by Oh Land

Why hasn't Bright Eyes included Denmark on his upcoming tour? Doubt he'll have any problems selling out a venue here! Btw. Did you remember to download great new track Shell Games?

Since I've started whining; The Paings of Being Pure at Heart isn't coming to Denmark either. I've always said that this band can do nothing wrong, but not coming to Denmark is a major blunder (at least if you ask me)...

Whatever happened to...

Not a highly original post this one, but for whatever nostalgic reason I spent some time last night checking out bands I've at some point featured on this blog. And on quite a few occasions I ended up asking myself: "what happened?", "why haven't we heard anything from these guys for ages?", "why weren't they huge?" etc. etc. Lots of questions to be answered, so I put on my Sherlock Holmes cap, found a magnifying glass, worded "the game's afoot" and started to search for information, updates or (heck) even signs of life from a few of the band...

The Holiday Show
They released their debut album in October 2008 and seemed poised for bigger things. But as soon as We Are Popular was released they more or less stopped promoting the album and concerts have since then been few and far between. Searches don't give any explanation to the lack of activity though a couple of band members seem to be busy doing other things (writing songs for other projects and promoting music). So I guess the project has been put to rest...for now (I hope).
+ Always Something Missing

Us With Millions
In April 2009 the band wrote that a track had been playlisted by P3 and an album was forthcoming. Since then; not a word. Can't find updates anywhere, so I took a shortcut and mailed the drummer asking for updates, news, gossip...anything. Received a long reply this morning and the sad (but not so unexpected) news is that the band has split up. If by no others, they'll at least be missed by me!
+ Rosebud

Leisure Alaska
The band is/was responsible for one of the best music videos ever by a Danish band and released their debut album The Deja In My Vu in 2006. On a few occasions since then the band has written about their forthcoming album and in mid 2008 the track Present Yet Unseen was shared. In October 2009 the band posted a Talking To Teapots cover and that's the last thing I can find from the band. One band member is involved in this project and another band member is on Twitter. Perhaps he knows something (mail has been sent)?
+ Present Yet Unseen

Days
These guys should have been the kings of indie pop by now, as their 2008 debut EP Downhill was nothing but spectacular and made some of us believe that the band was ready to take on the world. Boy, were we ever wrong, as (a few live dates aside) the band has shown very few signs of being alive since then. I've heard some rumors (cannot recall exactly when and where I heard them) that the band was recording new material, but I've never seen it verified. Have asked a band member for news a couple of times, but the replies have been kind of vague, so not sure what to expect (if anything). It's a shame. It really is!
+ Downhill

Wanted to check out a few other bands, but my laptop was so slow that I decided to stop the project before things came to a violent end...

It's that time of year again...

So for the next two weeks I’ll be nowhere near a computer. This means no blog updates, no emails read or written, no concert tickets purchased and no new music discovered. So this will be the last batch of news, music etc. for a while.

Castello, better known as the frontman of The Holiday Show, is currently working on his solo project and demos of 4 tracks are currently streaming at Myspace. This is a little too close to “dansk pop” for my taste, but nonetheless I’ll pay close attention to how this develops.

Danish trio Spion impressed me quite a lot two years ago with their fine EP Tynd Is. Especially the title track was an amazing piece, and arguably featured some of the finest drumming this side of Mew. The band has recorded 4 new tracks, which are currently streaming at Myspace, but unfortunately they don’t quite reach the glorious heights of previous recordings.
+ Tynd Is

In a comment posted yesterday Danielle recommends Compute (a project masterminded by Ulrika Mild, but the live version features Liechtenstein lead singer Renée) and compares it to Kraftwerk and The Knife (but judge that yourself). But I do find the songs quite appealing despite being absolutely no fan of The Knife.
+ All Walk By

Italians My Awesome Mixtape are offering their new (and bloody fine) EP Other Houses as a free download to help promoting their album How Could a Village Turn Into a Town, which will be out on 42 Records in September.

Disappointed...

Not even sure that ”disappointed“ sums up exactly how I’m feeling right now. I was really looking forward to the concert Saturday evening at our local venue Toldkammeret (Entakt, The Holiday Show and Didium & The Black Bonnie Picture), but I’ve just learned that it has been cancelled. Would have been nice for a change not having to go to Copenhagen to see a few interesting bands, but the cancellation has probably everything to do with a lack of tickets sold (though this hasn't been verified). I cannot say that I’m surprised, as the shittiest bands sell the most tickets in this city.

Off to Tallinn (almost)...

Only a week and half has gone since I returned from the trip to Warsaw and it’s already time to board the next flight. So tomorrow I’ll be heading for the Estonian capital Tallinn, where I am going to spend 4 days with 7 of my very thirsty friends. Surprisingly (to some I suspect) plans do include other things beside drinking and among things I’m especially looking forward to visiting the Danish King’s Garden, where in 1219 our national flag was handed to the Danes by none other than God (at least according to the legend). This will be my first visit, so I don’t know all that much about the city, but the picture could make one believe that this both a beautiful and quite historical place?

Danish blog Frekvens seems rejuvenated as posts have started floating in a steady stream. Guess it’s about time that I start contributing as well and produce one of those “støj-på-frekvensen” posts?

In late October last year I fell completely in love with the self-titled debut EP by San Francisco 8-piece Photons, so obviously I was happy to receive the great news that time has now come for a follow-up. So next month the band will release their brand new 4-tracks EP named Glory, and the greatest news probably is that there isn’t that much new to tell at all, as the tracks on Glory are just as beautiful, catchy and easy to love, as those on the debut EP. Bring it on!
+ Where Were You Last Night

Blog favorites A Classic Education are just about to release the limited edition (300 copies) 7” single Best Regards/Rest on UK label Bailiwick Records. It will be out April 27 and the release will include download codes for the two tracks. Both tracks can be streamed at the label’s Myspace page (I’m no permitted to upload anything) and need I really state the obvious that this is excellent stuff?

Danish blog l’amour existe has posted a few photos from the Northern Portrait/The Electric Pop Group concert in Hamburg this past weekend. Those snapshots combined with a very positive review mailed to me by Peter (who was there as well – you lucky bastard), makes me really, really sad that I couldn’t go and more than ever makes me want to go to London next month!

Finally; here’s the new video for the track Snookerstar by The Holiday Show.

Always something missing...

When I wrote about the release of the We Are Popular debut album by The Holiday Show, something was indeed missing, as I had no song to accompany my post. Now the band’s label Slow Shark Records has mailed me the album opener Always Something Missing to share with anyone interested, thus helping to make my previous post complete.
+ Always Something Missing

Blog favorites Kind of girl is currently touring the UK and is writing a "tour diary" for the readers of Gaffa (in Danish).

This Sunday afternoon (November 23) Majorian is throwing a party to celebrate the release of the band’s new self-titled EP. The EP contains 3 tracks produced by Paul Schroeder and the artwork has been created by Tracy Maurice. The band promises a free copy of the EP to anyone showing up at the party, which will take place at Restaurant Magstræde 16 (in Copenhagen) at 4PM. None of the new tracks are yet available, but a bunch of older tracks are free to download at BandBase.

We are popular...

Didn’t go to that concert Friday evening after all, as we ended up in some posh winebar instead and got stuck. Saturday morning I mournfully regretted that I did go, but that had more to do with the hangovers than actually missing the concert. But before surrendering myself to the virtues of the wine, I visited the TP music store right next to Rundetårn, where The Holiday Show was playing a short in store concert. The band's label had already mailed me a promo copy of the debut album We Are Popular, so picking up a copy wasn’t necessary. Instead I had a 10 minutes chat afterwards with Mads (the drummer) about the band’s future plans, ambitions etc.
The album is officially released today, and it will be interesting to follow the overall reception. The band has been media darlings for some time winning “MyMusic-legatet” in 2006 as well as getting a nice demo review (5 out of 6 stars) in Gaffa last year. But those happy and noncommittal days as a demo band are over, and the first review of the album was less than enthusiastic. However another review has surfaced, which takes a far more positive look at the album.
From a personal point of view I’m happy to finally see the album released (after all it’s been more than 2½ years since my first post on the band), as I’m eagerly awaiting new recordings from the band. May sound absurd as the debut has just been released, but as I’ve been following the band this closely, I was already quite familiar with most of the album tracks, as they’ve been floating around in cyberspace in various versions for a long, long time.
Should you however be a complete stranger to The Holiday Show and have a soft spot for irresistible electro-pop tunes, I can only recommend that you give these four lads a really thorough listen.
I have no tracks available for free download, but five album tracks can be streamed at Myspace. (buy)

Shorties...

The jury is still out on the concert tonight. I’m meeting a friend in Copenhagen for beer(s) and shawarma, and the mission tonight will be selling him the idea of going. But he has fairly decent taste in music, so shouldn’t be that hard…I hope!

We Had Faces Then enters the Danish album chart at no. 29 this week. You probably only have to sell a few hundred copies these days to achieve that?

Guitarist and shoegaze enthusiast Andy Durutti has established his own label named Self Storage Recordings. The first release is a 16 tracks compilation featuring artists like Elika, Ulrich Schnauss, Soundpool, Panda Riot etc. and will be available November 3rd.

On the road again...

Am going to Jutland tomorrow morning in a work related matter and the fact that I will have to spend 6 hours alone in the car (3 hours back and forth) isn't exactly the most encouraging thing I can think of. At least I should have plenty of time to listen to some of the CD's I've bought recently and if the weather is fine the view from the bridge is always fantastic.

Is it possible to eat the words you've written? My judgment of the new moi Caprice album was premature to say the least. The album still lacks those catchy tunes of its predecessors, but according to an interview with the band found in the recent edition of Soundvenue all the catchy tunes were deliberately left off the album. Instead the band focused on producing a more "complete" album and now that I've spent substantial time listening to We Had Faces Then, I think they've accomplished just that.

The first review of the debut album by The Holiday Show has surfaced. The album certainly isn't the most groundbreaking you'll ever lay ears on, but the rating (two out of six) is downright ridiculous.

An English and a German version of BandBase has now been launched.

Shorties...

According to an article today (it’s in Danish, but read it here if you like) several nightclubs have successfully kept troublemakers away by not playing hip-hop and rap. Now you draw your own conclusions, but shitty music attracts...

In his blog yesterday the infamous Myspace founder Tom claimed that the download links for free tracks are back again. However I have yet to find one downloadable track, but am seriously looking forward to whenever things are back working properly again.

Biker Boy doesn't seem to be able to make the download function work, so he has posted download links for October Song as well as the remix of the track done by House of Primates. The firewall at work doesn't like the links, but I hope they are working!?

Great service! Slow Shark Records has mailed me a copy of the debut album We Are Popular by The Holiday Show…nearly 3 weeks before it’s released!

Hits In The Car favorite Pete White has added two newly recorded tracks to his Myspace player as well as a lovely new version of Hand Signals.

October 10 at 10am a new and vastly improved version (so we're told) of Gaffa.dk will be launched.

Busy, busy days...

The past few days have been terrible, but the weekend is approaching and brighter days are ahead. Guess it’s time for another round of “catching up”.

ENTAKT will release their yet untitled sophomore album on October 6. The two tracks (premixes) I’ve heard so far sound absolutely phenomenal, so I boldly predict that this will be my favorite album of 2008.

Diefenbach will release Dark Spinner, their 4th album, on October 27.

We Are Popular, the much anticipated debut album by The Holiday Show, will be out October 20.

October could end up being quite interesting, as moi Caprice (I’ve mentioned this previously) will release a new album as well.

One Weekly Gun is back writing songs, including this one inspired by the hoopla surrounding Paris Hilton's recent visit to Denmark.
+ Oh, Paris!

Thanks to Ivan for introducing me to Swedish duo The Argument, which is believed to be the new project of Marcus from Bakers at Dawn.
+ Forget All About The Politics

I've just purchased a copy of the This Is How It Ends EP by The Papertiger Sound. Stream the 4 tracks at Myspace.

One of the Danish radio journalists got so fed up with the Olympics that he decided to do something completely different and instead explore the Beijing indie rock scene. That way I (and hopefully a few others) got introduced to Carsick Cars, which we have been told are highly popular in their native country. The trio has been the opening act for Sonic Youth a few times and once you listen it becomes pretty obvious that the legendary US act has been a great source of inspiration.

Hits In The Car favorite Andrew Boland will be giving away free copies of his forthcoming release, the four-track How The West Was Won 7" EP. Read more at Myspace.

Catching up...

It never fails to amaze me how quickly my mailbox gets cluttered. I turn my back to it for a day or two and it's pretty darn close to exploding. Even if I was a full-time blogger I would never have the slightest chance of listening to all the (probably) great music mailed to me. And it's rather painful knowing that I'm missing out on some great stuff every day!

So what is more natural when you have 100's of mails to go through, than to always check out the ones from your favorites first, and among the "can't miss" mails are those from André of the The Remix Artist Collective (RAC). This time he's giving away his superb remix of Pull Shapes by The Pipettes as well as breaking the news that the collective's first remix album will be free to grab from Stereogum on Wednesday June 11 (that's today!).
+ The Pipettes - Pull Shapes (RAC mix)

I asked the question a few weeks back and we now have the answer! The debut album by The Holiday Show will be released some time this fall on Slow Shark Records. It's been more than two years since I featured this Copenhagen quartet for the first time, so this has been in the making for quite a while!
+ Snookerstar

There's a new track by Play People up at Myspace and Goes Out has to be one of the catchiest pop tunes we're going to hear this year. Not free to download, but make sure that you give it a listen nonetheless. Cloudberry Records are listed among their top friends, so perhaps we'll see an EP release very soon (know what? I'm starting a rumor here!)?

Innersounds has posted the lovely On Days Like These by Quincy Jones/Matt Monro. Anyone who has ever watched the original version of The Italian Job will probably recall this song as well as the opening scene.

Guess no one deserves this recognition more than Avi?

A new track by One Weekly Gun is up and this week it's small ode to how wonderful (sort of) life is.
+ Life is Great

Seems like the British press is falling in love with Kind of girl. Artrocker gives the band's live concert at The Spice of Life in London a rating of 4 (which apparently is very good) and calls the performance "potent and genuinely moving". Toxic Pete ends the review of the forthcoming album Lonely In A Modern Way with the words "...is hard to find faults with...". Well done!

Flashing of Knives
(formerly known as Sinai) will release their debut album In Shark Territory on Monday June 30. The release party will take place on Saturday at Undervand in Copenhagen and the doors will open at 9 PM (no entrance and cheap drinks). Hope to get a chance to listen to the rest of the album, as the first single (posted below) is a fine dance inspired rock tune.

The hopefuls...

Lovely UK indie pop band The Steadies are no more. Sad news really!
+ The Hopefuls

This is already a month old; Pennyblackmusic interviews Northern Portrait.

25 years since the release of You and Me Both and I still have a soft spot for Yazoo. But not soft enough to make me post any of the remixes mailed to me the other day to promote the forthcoming release of the 4-disc box set In Your Room. The remixes are completely useless and are tagged as “spare remixes” by the label. No wonder!

Yesterday when checking out the Vesterbro Festival line-up, I came across Danish quartet Ginger Ninja. This is pop music with a capital P, but very catchy and not without a certain charm.

Will The Holiday Show ever release an album? I'm probably not the only one awaiting some news on this?

Another year has started…

And hopefully an exciting one it will be. I have to “waste” one final month in my old job, before I can start the new one. Time will tell how this will affect the future of the blog, but obviously I’ll do my best to keep on updating it and finding new interesting stuff to post.

Despite having the impression that most of the world has been away on holiday the past couple of weeks, a few interesting things have still managed to catch my attention. This is the first batch and if everything works out as planned (no guarantee really), the next one should be posted tomorrow.

Ages ago (last year to be a little more exact) I wrote this about Danish duo Tetris = Therapy; “The music is an unpredictable blend of just about everything from noisy shoegaze guitars over grandiose post-rock to electronica, indiepop and heavy electronic beats”. Apparently the boys liked or agree with this description, because back then they asked if they could borrow it for their press material. Just before Christmas the duo published two brand new (and excellent) tracks and it didn't take many listens to realize that this description is still spot on.

Blog favorites The Holiday Show are busy in the studio recording songs for their debut album. As an appetizer the band is sharing the new version of I Love The Light. It certainly would be great if the band's debut would see a release in 2008.

Spies on Holiday...

Just a few thoughts on the Spion/The Holiday Show double concert Friday evening.

Apparently 8 PM is too early to start a concert? Not that many people showed up, which was quite a shame. Though I don't really think I should complain about this, because it meant that there was plenty of room for everyone.

The Holiday Show delivered a fine performance. Unlike last year on Vesterbro the boys had time enough to do a sound check, so the band sounded a lot better than back then. The guys are actually taking a break right now (saying they are on Holiday, would sound like a stupid attempt at trying to be funny), but decided to take "a break from the break" to be able to play the concert. They seemed to have a great time performing, so I don't think they regret that decision at all. Afterwards I spoke briefly to Mads and Casper of the band and it seems like lots of positive things are happening. But we'll get back to that, whenever they are ready to share the news.

Second act Spion also gave a fine and energetic performance and certainly seemed to have a great time on stage, despite a few equipment problems. Luckily I got my hands on their newest demo and after listening to it during my drive home ("pump up the volume"), it is absolutely unbelievable that they haven't been signed to a record label.

In between the two acts I had the pleasure of speaking to Thomas of Volvoe. He admitted to be a regular visitor to the blog, so if you read this Thomas - It was really nice talking to you!!

Friday blurbs...

Recently I’ve been thinking more and more about switching language and start writing my posts in Danish instead. Let’s be honest for second. My English isn’t really any good and these posts are taking me forever to write. Writing in Danish would save me a lot of time and I’m pretty certain that the posts will be funnier and a tiny bit more interesting to read if written in my native language. But the obvious reason why I’m rooting against this switch is that I, pretty much like every other naïve blogger, hope that someday the entire world will be knocking on my bloggerdoor. Then it would be plain stupid that the world couldn't understand what I was writing - wouldn't it. And furthermore I'd probably risk loosing the two non-Danish speaking readers I have, if I made such a change? So for now the blog will continue being written in English and the dictionary will remain my loyal and trusted companion.

I wrote it earlier this week and I’m happy to repeat it. The more I listen to Our Love To Admire the more I like it.

Handily Supertroels has posted a compilation of all his freebies.

Some might ask what's there to be excited about, but I'm really, really looking forward to see Spion and The Holiday Show in concert tonight. Family obligations make it pretty difficult to fill my calendar with concert dates, so for obvious reasons I have to treasure the ones where I get the opportunity to go.
+ Spion - Dine Øjne
+ The Holiday Show - Put Me On A TV-show

This has already received plenty of blogger love, but I think that the great initiative deserves my recognition as well. The independent label Autumn Tone (run by Justin of An Aquarium Drunkard) has reissued the debut album Shadows Rise by post-folk duo Travel By Sea, as an “appetizer” for the band’s second release – due later this summer/fall. And a beautiful album it is. So quiet and mellow that you almost get the impression that it was created especially for the rainy days spent on the couch with a smoking cup of coffee in your hand. Despite truly deserving it, the album probably won’t appeal to the masses (these kinds of bands just never seem to do), so I very much doubt that it will propel the band (or the label for that matter) to stardom. But I assume at lot less will do just fine? However should I be wrong; then it's possible to buy the album here. Finally - am I really the only one who easily could imagine Lindsey Buckingham performing Brightside?

Chris posted it yesterday and I'll post it today. The new (AND free) track by Iron and Wine is excellent. His new album will be released September 25.

Spies on thin ice...

Danish rock quartet Spion (the Danish word for spy) wasn't picked as Gaffa's demo of July, but the review of the band's 2007 demo Tynd Is (Danish for thin ice) was still pretty good (4 out of 6 stars), so I decided to give it a listen. A rather good idea it seems, as especially the pulsing title track has blown me away completely. The drums sound like something that Mew could have recorded during the And The Glass Handed Kites recordings, and the chorus is one of those that will be stuck in your head for the next many, many days. Please don't let the fact that the band is singing in Danish scare you away, as this is excellent stuff! The band has recorded two more demos/EP's and both of them are available for free from the band's webpage.

Probably should add that the demo by The Holiday Show was reviewed as well and received 5 out of 6 stars (pretty good and the band was compared to my old heroes Gangway). Demo EP of the month was by alternative rockers Up In Arms.

Is fasties really a word in English (now I know it isn't!)? Oh well - I hope you understand what I mean by this!

First single Where Did We Go from the Phonovectra debut album Too Young To Die is available for free from the band's Myspace profile. It's a great rock track and highly recommendable! I ordered the album a while back and expect it to arrive any day soon!
+ Where Did We Go

The Holiday Show has posted a new track on their Myspace player. Sadly it's not a freebie. The track is called City Girlfriend and is surprisingly indie pop inspired. Accordingly an album is in the making!

The Lovekevins has a new single called Tamagotchi Freestyle. It's from the band's forthcoming album that will be called Vs the snow. The album will be released April 4 on Songs I Wish I Had Written and is described as "A perfect blend of dream like noise and steady wonderful pop melodies". The new single is one of those typical irresistible and catchy ones.

Eheruncool is a quartet from Rosswein somewhere in Germany.
